Zakopane is one of the best destinations for a family trip to the mountains. You do not have to plan long or demanding hikes straight away. In the town and its immediate surroundings you will find easy trails, short walks, attractions for children and places that also work well in poor weather.

If you are planning a trip to Zakopane with children, it is worth combining a few shorter Tatra excursions with slower sightseeing in town. This way, even a stay of several days can be enjoyable for both adults and children.

In this guide, we explain what to do in Zakopane with children, which easy trails to choose and how to plan a family stay in the Tatra foothills.

How to plan a family trip to Zakopane?

The most important part of planning a family stay in Zakopane is matching the programme to the children's age and abilities.

With younger children, short valleys, walks and attractions that do not require hours of walking work best. Older children can try somewhat longer routes, but it is still worth leaving time for rest and activities in town.

A good approach is to alternate days with:

  • a short Tatra excursion
  • a quieter day in Zakopane
  • an indoor attraction
  • another mountain route

This prevents the trip from turning into a new full-day hike every day.

Biały Valley – an easy trail with children

If we had to recommend one route for a family's first Tatra adventure, Biały Valley would be one of our first choices.

This picturesque valley is close to the centre of Zakopane. The trail follows the Biały Stream among rocks and forest. You can feel the mountain atmosphere after only a few minutes, so you do not have to walk far to see something special.

According to the official Zakopane website, the basic section of Biały Valley is about 1.7 km long and takes approximately one hour.

It is especially suitable for:

  • families with children
  • people starting their Tatra adventure
  • older visitors
  • hikers who do not want to plan a full-day excursion

The trail is not completely flat, but it quickly offers a stream, rocks, forest and small cascades.

For a detailed description, see our separate guide: Biały Valley – an easy Tatra hike.

Droga pod Reglami – a relaxed walk

Droga pod Reglami is a great idea for a quieter day. The route runs at the foot of the Tatras and connects the entrances to several popular valleys. You can walk just one section, making it easy to match the distance to the children's age and the weather.

A major advantage is that it can be combined with Biały Valley, Strążyska Valley or a walk towards Kuźnice. There is no need to plan one fixed route from start to finish.

For families staying near Biały Valley, it is also a convenient way to begin a walk without using the car every time.

Strążyska Valley – a short walk to Strążyska Meadow

Another popular family option is Strążyska Valley. It is a relatively short and accessible route through the forest towards Strążyska Meadow. Along the way you can see a mountain stream and the increasingly impressive silhouette of Giewont.

For many families, the meadow itself is a good destination without continuing higher. Children get the feeling of a real mountain trip, while the route does not have to take the whole day.

Sarnia Skała – for older children

If your children are comfortable on mountain trails, you can consider Sarnia Skała. The popular loop through Biały Valley, Sarnia Skała and Strążyska Valley is about 6.8 km, takes around 3 hours of walking and includes almost 500 metres of ascent.

This is definitely more than an ordinary walk. We would recommend it mainly to:

  • older children
  • families with some mountain experience
  • families travelling in good weather

The reward is a beautiful view, especially of the Giewont massif.

Gubałówka – an easy viewpoint

Gubałówka is a family-trip classic in Zakopane. If the children are not ready for longer ascents, you can take the funicular and treat Gubałówka as an easy viewpoint. At the top, you can walk around and admire the Tatra panorama. It is a good alternative for a day when you want to see the mountains without planning a traditional hike.

Krupówki and Rówień Krupowa

Krupówki may not be the main attraction for visitors focused on mountain hiking, but during a family trip it is worth setting aside some time for the centre.

You can combine a walk through the centre with:

  • ice cream or dessert
  • souvenir shopping
  • a visit to the local market
  • a walk towards Rówień Krupowa

Especially during a multi-day stay, it is good to have a quiet evening without another trail.

After a more active day, Rówień Krupowa is worth visiting. This large open space in the centre lets children rest from trail walking and offers a beautiful view of the Tatras in good weather.

Family events are also held here. The official Zakopane calendar can filter events by categories including “For children”, so it is worth checking the current programme before your visit.

Children's attractions and a rainy-day plan

Zakopane with children does not have to mean mountains only. The branches of the Tatra Museum can be a good addition, giving children an introduction to the region's nature, culture and history.

The town and local institutions also regularly organise workshops for children. The 2026 holiday programme included nature, art and sensory activities as well as workshops connected with Podhale culture. Check current opening hours, prices and activities before visiting.

Rain in the mountains does not have to mean a wasted day. It is worth preparing a plan B, such as:

  • a museum
  • children's workshops
  • thermal baths near Zakopane
  • a shorter walk through the centre
  • a cinema or another indoor attraction

For a longer stay, do not plan every mountain excursion rigidly. Tatra weather can change quickly, so it is useful to keep the option of swapping days.

Thermal baths near Zakopane

Thermal pools are a popular addition to a family stay in Podhale. Children can enjoy them as an attraction in their own right, while adults can use them to relax after several days of hiking.

There are several large thermal complexes near Zakopane, so compare them by:

  • distance
  • attractions for children
  • outdoor areas
  • opening hours
  • current prices

An example family itinerary

For a first family stay, you can use a simple plan.

  • Morning: Biały Valley
  • Afternoon: rest
  • Evening: Krupówki and Rówień Krupowa

It is a gentle first day that helps children get used to walking in the mountains.

  • Morning: a trip to Strążyska Valley
  • Afternoon: lunch and rest
  • Evening: a quiet walk through Zakopane

If the weather is good, choose Gubałówka and the Tatra panorama. If it rains, choose thermal baths or an indoor attraction.

This plan is not overly intense, while still allowing children to discover the mountains and Zakopane itself.

Where to stay in Zakopane with children?

Location is very important for families. Look for a place within walking distance of both some town attractions and a trailhead. This reduces daily driving, parking searches and time spent in traffic.

Mountain Lotus Apartment Zakopane is in a quiet part of Zakopane, about a 5-minute walk from the entrance to Biały Valley and about 10 minutes from Krupówki.

The apartment sleeps up to 4 people and offers:

  • a separate bedroom
  • a living room with sleeping space
  • an equipped kitchen
  • fast Wi-Fi
  • a parking space in an underground garage

Its location means that some family walks can begin directly from the apartment, without driving each time. Mountain Lotus Apartment Zakopane.

Safety on easy trails

Even easy Tatra routes are still mountain routes. Before setting out, check:

  • the current weather
  • Tatra National Park notices
  • the route length and elevation gain
  • suitable footwear
  • enough water and food
  • an extra layer of clothing

In the mountains, do not rely only on the estimated walking time. With children, a trip can take much longer. Allow extra time for breaks and turn back if the weather or the children's wellbeing starts to deteriorate.

Is Zakopane worth visiting with children?

Definitely, especially if you do not try to climb high peaks every day. Zakopane's greatest advantage is its variety. In one stay you can combine easy Tatra trails, walks, viewpoints, local culture and attractions for children.

Biały Valley, Droga pod Reglami and Strążyska Valley let you begin your mountain adventures without planning demanding excursions. If the weather worsens, there are still many ways to spend the day in town and the surrounding area.

Which easy Tatra trails should you choose first?

For a first trip, consider Biały Valley, Strążyska Valley and a section of Droga pod Reglami. Always match the distance to the children's age and the weather conditions.

Is Biały Valley suitable for children?

Yes. It is one of the more accessible valleys close to the centre of Zakopane. The basic route is about 1.7 km and, according to the official town website, takes about an hour.

What can you do in Zakopane with children when it rains?

Visit museums, check current children's workshops, go to thermal baths or plan a quieter day in the centre.

How many days should you plan for a family stay in Zakopane?

For a first family trip, 3–5 days is a good choice. This allows you to alternate easy mountain routes with quieter activities.

Which accommodation location is best for a family?

The most convenient location lets you walk to both the centre and selected trails. This reduces the need for daily car travel.
